Women are the limiting resource for men and it is reproductive access that drives men's quest for social status. The more dominance a man can gain, the greater his chances of securing the most attractive women. Nobody is suggesting that men consciously know this (although male one-upmanship seems to be energised by a female audience). In fact, male-male status jockeying often seems to exclude. A Mind of Her Own: The Evolutionary Psychology of Women in which Campbell explains why women commit fewer and less-violent crimes than men do. the book would nonetheless make a fine text. Her research was largely concerned with sex differences in aggression between men and women. She was professor of psychology at Durham University.
